In 2006, Colorado's low birthweight rate was 9 percent. In Colorado between 1995 and 2005, the percentage of singleton infants born low birth weight increased nearly 6 percent. Risk factors during pregnancy that can cause babies to be born at a low birthweight include smoking, poor nutrition, and inappropriate weight gain. Women who do not gain enough weight during pregnancy are more than 1 1/2 times as likely to deliver a low birthweight infant compared to women who gain enough weight. Women who gain too much weight during pregnancy have an increased risk of premature delivery, preeclampsia, and increased risk of requiring a cesarean section delivery.
