Tipping the Scales: Weighing in on Solutions to the Low Birth Weight Problem in Colorado

In 2006, Colorado's low birthweight rate was 9 percent.

In Colorado between 1995 and 2005, the percentage of singleton infants born low birth weight increased nearly 6 percent.

Risk factors during pregnancy that can cause babies to be born at a low birthweight include smoking, poor nutrition, and inappropriate weight gain.

The mission of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Healthy Baby Campaign is to change risk behaviors of women related to weight management, proper nutrition and smoking cessation before, during and after pregnancy in order to reduce the number of low birthweight babies born in Colorado and to improve the health of Colorado families.

Women who do not gain enough weight during pregnancy are more than 1 1/2 times as likely to deliver a low birthweight infant compared to women who gain enough weight.

Women who gain too much weight during pregnancy have an increased risk of premature delivery, preeclampsia, and increased risk of requiring a cesarean section delivery.
